C11 Clean All Purpose Clean Review and Giveaway - When Caterpillars Fly

I don’t know about you, but I am always on the hunt for natural cleaning products. But finding one that works and is safe can sometimes be trickySo when C11 Clean reached out to me to ask if I wanted to try their all-natural, eco-friendly all-purpose cleaner, I was absolutely on board!

They sent me some samples and I went to work trying it out on a variety of surfaces – the dining room table, kitchen counters, bathtub, toilet and shower. And I’m delighted to say that it did a GREAT job on every task I gave it. As a matter of fact, I was actually pretty sad when I ran out.

*This is a sponsored post. I am not being compensated but I was provided free product in exchange for my review. However all opinions are my own and I would never share something with y'all that I wouldn't use myself!*

And guess what! As part of the Earth Day Giveaway Hop, I have some FREE C11 Clean All-Purpose Cleaner to give away to some lucky readers! (More on that in a minute.)

But first things first! Lets talk about this amazing product and why I really love it.

1) It smells fresh and clean!

I don’t know about you but once I started “going natural” I found I can’t even walk down the cleaning aisle without getting a headache. I can not handle all those artificial scents. And lets face it, sometimes I have too much else going on in life to whip up a DIY cleaner and add essential oils too. I generally just turn to water and a microfiber cloth to clean my counters but I do miss that clean scent. So when I opened up the bottles of C11 Clean, I took a good whiff of these clean (and delicious!) scents and knew I would enjoy sampling this!

My favorite scent was the Buttermint, it smells like after dinner mints – no kidding! Its possible that I *might* have continued to clean much longer than necessary because I was so engrossed in the scent. A close second was Elevation because it is lemon-y and smells super duper clean. It replaces that super familiar wood cleaner (you know the one!) – without the toxic headache. Winning! The other varieties are Lemon Mint and Germ Warrior (this one has extra germ-fighting essential oils – perfect for bathrooms.) Note: Buttermint does currently contain a small amount of artificial fragrance. It was not strong enough to bother me and the owner is in the process of reformulating it but I do want you to be aware. The other varieties do not contain synthetic fragrance.

2) Its biodegradable and non-toxic!

I try not to bring anything into my home that would prove toxic to me, my family, my pets, OR the environment. Of course, I am not always successful, but I do make an effort. C11 Clean is a product that I can feel comfortable with on all those levels.

C11 Clean All Purpose Clean Review and Giveaway - When Caterpillars Fly

Now, since I strive to always be truthful to my readers, lets go over a few ingredients in the C11 Clean all-purpose cleaner that you may have concerns about. (And we may learn a few things along the way!)

  • Sodium coco-sulfate” and “cocamidopropylamine oxide” – these are surfactants. They help to break down the soap (instead of traditional saponification processes). Unlike some other surfactants, these are biodegradable and non-toxic.
  • Phenoxyethanol” and “methylisothiazolinone” – these are anti-bacterial. They preserve your cleaner so mold and bacteria don’t build up. Again, this is not necessary with a traditional saponification process, but the ones used in C11 are non-toxic and biodegradable.
  • Citrus grandis is simply grapefruit seed extract, which has tons of cleaning benefits.
  • “Sodium tetraborate decahydrate” is just the fancy scientific name for Borax – the same cleaner you may have tossed in your washing machine and some people even super dilute it down and drink it as a source of the trace mineral Boron. (More on that in another post!) Please note, BORAX is non-toxic and perfectly safe. You may have read alerts about BORIC ACID being highly toxic, and it is, but that is a different product entirely. Promise!

Now you may be asking “Why would a natural company even put those synthetic surfactants and preservatives in a cleaner?” Well, for a lot of reasons but primarily, the traditional saponification process is a little more difficult to do on a commercial scale and it doesn’t always guarantee a consistent product. The use of synthetic surfactants reduce cost and provide the same product every time. If avoiding all synthetics is important to you, then there are products that do not contain them or you can make your own. But as far as products go that do go the synthetic route (and skip the traditional saponification), this is a good choice.

The other concern that you may have is that EWG or some other similar organization do state to NOT use products that contain these ingredients. And they are correct. But they are referring to products like shampoo, body wash and hand soap. Products that you will be actively rubbing into your skin. These synthetic surfactants can cause irritation when applied directly to the skin. However you will be spraying C11 Clean directly onto the surface and wiping with a towel. Even if you briefly touch it, the amount of exposure you will experience is inconsequential (unless you have a specific allergy to one of these ingredients, of course) and they are safe to breathe in. Other examples of companies that use these ingredients are Honest Co and Seventh Generation. In addition, they are in the process of reformulating and swapping those synthetics out for even more natural products so they will be even safer in the future.C11 Clean All Purpose Clean Review and Giveaway - When Caterpillars Fly

3) It works!

This really is the most important one, isn’t it? It doesn’t matter how safe a product is if it doesn’t work. The creator of C11 Clean started out working for an eco-friendly cleaning service and was tired of hauling around several bottles of cleaners and could never find a true all-purpose cleaner. So she made one! So not only is eco-friendly and smells great but it probably works better than some of the other stuff you may have tried – and you will be supporting a small, eco-friendly business! C11 Clean can be used on tubs, toilets, counter tops, glass, granite, tile, linoleum, laminate, wood (yes, floors!), stainless, and marble. You can also try it on cars, carpets, laundry stains, pet odors and stains, smelly shoes, and even jewelry – of course, always do a small test  first, especially with the second list. I’ve even heard it can be used as a pest repellent for plants. I’m gonna test that theory this year.

4) Its cost effective! (That’s another word for cheap)

Compared to other similar cleaners, its about the same price for the 32oz ready-to-use bottle. However, if you purchase the 33oz concentrate you can refill your ready-to-use bottle 11 times making the cost of each 32oz refill $3.81.  I don’t know about you, but I really don’t like paying for water in my cleaners. I have water at my home and its just about free, so I buy concentrates whenever I can!

5) Its less waste!

Finally, the best part about a 33oz concentrate is that you don’t need to purchase 11 bottles! So this will take up less space in your cabinet and you will use less plastic over the life of the product. Most concentrates on the market come in 3oz or 4oz bottles, which is great, but its really not much less plastic. And 3oz bottles tend to get lost in my house!

You can order C11 Clean All Purpose Cleaner straight from their website! Bonus: they just created a discount for When Caterpillars Fly readers! Use code “wcfluv20” to save 20% off any order! (Expires 5/7/17) I plan to make sure I always have a bottle of C11 Clean All-Purpose Cleaner (and the concentrate!) at my house for those tough jobs when a plain towel and water won’t do or if I am just craving that clean smell! I hope you do too!

For some reason I can’t get the giveaway form to load 🙁

I’ve been using vinegar to clean, lately. It also works really well as fabric softener, which is good because I’m allergic to nearly all brands, and the hypoallergenic ones are so expensive.

The only cleaners I use are vinegar and baking soda. I use baking soda to wash my dishes instead of soap but you don’t pour the baking soda in the water, you put it on a damp cloth and wash the dish with that. You should see how sparkling clean it gets the dishes with no soap scum. Vinegar in the toilet for 8 hours and then scrub it with a brush. A razor blade on the shower tile is the best way I know to deal with soap scum on the shower tiles. Vinegar and newspaper on glass. Baking soda for the bathroom and kitchen sinks and countertops. I can’t use chemical stuff for medical reasons but I don’t miss any of it at all. Love not having to deal with all the products. Vinegar and baking soda is all you need. Thanks 🙂

I’ve been using vinegar as a cleaner lately. Much nicer then products full of chemicals although it does take more elbow grease.

Right now I am using Airbiotics All Purpose Cleaner, there are small, sealed tubes of active probiotics and other natural ingredients that you break open and mix with purified water, and the probiotics will remain alive up to a week. It has no fragrance at all, and works fine everywhere except cutting grease in the kitchen.

I am very conscious of the products I use to be earth friendly. However, plastic pkg is not. I wish entire indurstries would go back to cartons or some other biodegradable material. Just because the product plastic container is recyclable is not enough to make me buy. But maybe just once.
